Doctoral Project - Correspondence Class
The correspondence section of this lay pastor training course is designed to make training accessible to those who would otherwise be unable to receive this kind of instruction. It relies on internet technology to distribute the class materials and collect assignments. It also adds the element of an on-site pastoral mentor.
 
This approach, like the conventional class, attempts to teach the competencies most essential to pastoral acceptance and success, as based on the opinions and practices of pastors in the field. The top five pastoral competencies identified by pastors surveyed are as follows:
  • People skills
  • Biblical preaching
  • Spiritual vitality
  • Spiritual leadership
  • Team building
These skills were taught to a select group of lay pastor candidates through ten online presentations and corresponding field assignments in 2008. The schedule for field-testing the curriculum was as follows:
